Retail Logistics
Retail logistics is the organizing process of managing the flow of retail products from the manufacturer to the consumer. Large retailers deal in various products and as a result, they need systematic planning of the movement of their products until they reach the intended destinations. Retail logistics ensure efficient and effective delivery and service at lesser prices by way of efficient logistics. They are concerned with product availability, where products are made available to the right customers at the right time. Logistic elements’ costs are relatively high if they are not controlled adequately. A retailer must pay close attention to the processes of flow of products to the customers to avoid incurring extra costs.
The retail logistics system has numerous functions. The system helps improve organizational operations to be market and consumer-based. Consumers can receive the right products at the right place and time. The process is made possible because of planned approach, right from the initial point until the point of delivery. Retail logistics also maximize the profitability of the present and future operation of a firm since there is a scheduled plan on how operations will take place (Bouzaabia, Bouzaabia and Capatina, 2013). The system also ensures availability of infrastructures such as warehousing and transportation and administration. Good interrelationship between the infrastructures improves coordination in business. In addition, the retail logistic system attempts to add value for the customers. Because of this determination, a company can bring the cost components in the delivery process under the direct control of the retailer. Depending on the percentage of sales, retailers generate central or regional distribution centers. They make a decision on important investment in property, plant, and equipment with related expenses.
