The Impact of Myths on Conflict in the Workplace
People experience conflict in their daily lives with relatives, friends, and co-workers; thus, it is not a strange thing for everyone. Conflict is not always detrimental as it can contribute a change. Since it is a broad topic that involves a lot of issues that can be discussed, this paper focuses on myths about conflict, whether these myths are completely false and those that have been true to me at least once in my life, and how understanding about these myths can influence the handling of conflict in the workplace.
In most instances, many individuals initially associate conflict as negative, which illustrates a myth about conflict being bad, but conflict can be beneficial in certain cases. One common myth about conflict is that it is abnormal, while harmony is normal (Jandt, 2016). However, conflicts are unavoidable and normal in relationships similar to harmony. Another myth related to conflict claims that conflict damages relationships (Jandt, 2016). Nevertheless, undecided conflict destroys a relationship because conflicts are confronted by all parties involved to collaborate to find a resolution that might strengthen the relationship. Moreover, productive teams are assumed never to encounter conflict, which is false. Usually, workplace teams striving to evade conflict can encounter disasters, but a work team openly expresses and addresses conflict to maximize productivity.
