The rapid advancement in technology has had a significant impact on the delivery of training programs. The rise of e-learning means that trainers have to consider different technological tools in the creation and delivery of training programs that meet the needs of the modern workforce. According to Kopp (2014), e-learning refers to any technology-enhanced learning, virtual instruction, computer-based instruction, or internet-based teaching. E-learning often encompasses the delivery of media such as audio, text, video, or animation. According to Assareh and Bidokht (2011), e-learning can be classified as either synchronous or asynchronous, depending on the degree to which the delivery of the program is bound by time and space. Synchronous means that the training occurs in real-time, for example in applications such as Zoom and Skype. Asynchronous means that the delivery of the program is not in real-time and learners can access training or learning at different times. Kopp (2014) points out that while technology has become a universal thing in the workplace, e-learning must incorporate adult learning principles. As such, e-learning should be problem-oriented, interactive, promote learners’ intrinsic motivation, and be applicable to real-world phenomena.
Barriers to e-learning readiness can emanate from different aspects including psychological, environmental, technological, content, financial, among others (Kopp, 2014). Technical barriers such as internet problems, bandwidth limitations, or incompatible technology can be a big hindrance to both the trainer and the trainee (Kimiloglu, Ozturan, & Kutlu, 2017). For the e-leaning to work seamlessly, relevant technologies should be able in place to support it.
