New London’s reasoning about being “too bright.”
Robert Jordan from Connecticut applied for the position of a cop at the New London Police Department. Being one of the many applicants that were interested in the post and as a rule, Jordan had to undergo a test, otherwise called the Wonderlic Personal Test (WPT). The WPT is a cognitive test that tests the ability of a person and whose result is used to determine their Intelligent Quotient (IQ). The New London Police has a minimum and maximum qualification requirements that an applicant needs to meet to qualify for the post. According to the police department, a person needs to score a minimum of 20 and a maximum of 27 points in a Wonderlic test. However, Robert surpassed the Police’s maximum score by five points when he by getting 33 points.
According to the police post, Robert was not hired because he was overqualified for the position he was applying for. According to Aamodt (2015), the reason behind the police department’s decision was that recruiting applicants who surpass the police’s maximum requirements would lead to a high rate of employees’ turnover. This is because the nature of work that the employees would be subjected to does would not enable them to attain job satisfaction therefore; they will not be contented to continue working there. Another reason was that the department was afraid to incur losses resulting from the high rate of turnovers because training new applicants are costly. However, this reasoning is elusive because there is no research which supports the notion that high level of intelligence affects a person’s level of job satisfaction.
Hence, although the prerequisite is coherent because it is used against all applicants, it does not, however, give a satisfying explanation of why it locks out the applicants with high IQs. Unlike the New London Police Department, other police departments in the U.S. recruit intelligent applicants with high IQ scores, but they have not recorded cases of unprofessionalism CITATION Aam15 \l 1033 (Aamodt, 2015). Thus, the New London Police Department only uses this reasoning to justify its hiring policy, but it is not a sufficient one because there is no direct link which correlates job satisfaction with high intelligence scores.
