Because it has become increasingly successful, I.B.M is a company that is thriving in the global markets. Behind I.B.M.’s relentless success over the past decade are important steps that have been anything but conservative. In his HBR interview, Palmisano outlines some important steps which saw the advancement of I.B.M during his tenure. In this discussion, I will highlight three steps that were integral to I.B.M.’s success as explained by Palmisano.
First, collect the employees’ input on values. Evaluate the strategic difficulties facing your company, propose values that will help your company alleviate those difficulties, and collect feedback from employees’ regarding your ideas (Palmisano, 2004, pg 38). Palmisano saw a reintegration in the IT industry; consumers wanted packages of computer services and products from single companies. I.B.M. then had to provide customized solutions at a single price.
Second, analyze employees’ inputs. Assess employees’ inputs for themes (Palmisano, 2004, pr 38). For instance, many individuals within the large company disputed the statement “integrity earns trust” and saw it as inwardly focused, outdated, and vague. They wanted a form of guidance that was more centered on how to behave with external stakeholders and with each other (Palmisano, 2004, pg 53).
Third, initiate change efforts to eliminate obstacles. Launch change programs that allow individuals to live their values (Palmisano, 2004, pg 39). For example, I.B.M. allocated $5000 each year to managers to use to develop client relationships, generate...
