Destructive and Restorative Conflict Behaviors: Olympic Athlete's Drug Scandal

Essay Instructions:

Prior to beginning work on this assignment,
Review Chapter 5: Negotiation Skills and Resolving Conflicts With Others from Week 3
Review Chapter 6: Dealing With Anger, Aggression, and Bullying from Week 4
Read Chapter 9: Apologies, Forgiveness, and Reconciliation
In your study on conflict management and conflict resolution, the literature has revealed three behaviors that could be helpful in managing a business or organizational-based conflict and three behaviors that could prove detrimental to a business-based conflict. In the short run, each behavior could lead to at least a win-lose situation for participants to the conflict. In the long run, some of the behaviors could produce a lasting win-win situation, while other behaviors could produce either a winner and a loser or even a lose-lose outcome where both parties could be declared losers.
In your paper,
Describe a drug-related scandal involving an athlete that occurred either at one of the Winter Olympics or one that occurred at one of the summer Olympics.
Supporting documentation is required.
Describe how conflict management using win-win negotiation could be useful in the situation (as described in the “Win-Win Negotiation” section of Chapter 5).
Describe how conflict management using distributive strategies could be useful in the situation (as described in the section “Negotiation Strategies” of Chapter 5).
Describe how conflict management using integrative strategies could be useful in the situation (as described in the section “Negotiation Strategies” of Chapter 5).
Argue whether the parties should use win-win, distributive, or integrative strategies to produce the best available outcome if the athlete is believed to be guilty (as listed in Chapter 5).
Examine which strategies or tactics should and should not be used by the athletes, the coaches of the athletes, the national governments of the athletes, and the International Olympic Committee.
Argue which behaviors should and should not be used by the athletes, the coaches of the athletes, the national governments of the athletes and the International Olympic Committee in order to gain the upper hand in the conflict (as listed in Chapter 6 [anger, aggression or bullying] and Chapter 9 [apologies, forgiveness and reconciliation]).
Determine whether the approaches that you selected also maintain the integrity of the Olympic games.

Olympic Athlete's Drug Scandal
The 2022 Winter Olympics bore witness to a significant drug-related controversy surrounding Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva, who faced allegations of doping after her positive test for the prohibited substance trimetazidine. Despite the World Anti-Doping Agency's strict regulations to ensure fair competition and maintain the Games' integrity, Valieva's case ignited a contentious debate. Rather than accepting her provisional ban, Valieva and her legal team embarked on an appeal process, drawing significant attention to the issue (PBS News Hour, 2022). This decision thrust the matter into the international spotlight, dividing opinions within the sports community. Some vehemently supported her right to compete, emphasizing the complexities of her age and potential exposure to the substance through her grandfather's medication. In contrast, others, including athletes and proponents of stringent anti-doping measures, argued for her disqualification. Valieva's case has raised profound ethical questions surrounding the principles of fairness, integrity, and the role of anti-doping regulations in preserving equitable competition at the Olympic level.
Win-Win Negotiation in Olympic Drug Scandal
In light of Kamila Valieva's doping case at the Beijing Olympics, adopting win-win negotiation strategies is viable to resolve this complex matter. The chosen method should prioritize pursuing mutually beneficial solutions, engaging essential stakeholders like the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), and Kamila Valieva's legal counsel. These transparent dialogues should cultivate a profound comprehension of the interests and apprehensions held by all involved parties, with the primary objective of identifying areas of consensus (Jandt, 2016). This middle ground could entail carefully examining the circumstances surrounding Valieva's positive test for trimetazidine, including her legal defense's argument regarding contamination from her grandfather's medication. It allows Valieva to acknowledge unintended substance consumption while pursuing personal development and an adjusted anti-doping strategy. By emphasizing shared interests, such as upholding fair play, preserving the Olympics' integrity, and ensuring equitable competition, this negotiation approach can yield a resolution that addresses both anti-doping organizations' commitment to fairness and Valieva's quest for redemption and a just athletic opportunity.
Distributive Strategies for the Olympic Drug Scandal
In the context of Valieva's doping scandal, the involved entities may contemplate applying distributive conflict management strategies, also known as competitive or win-lose tactics. Under this approach, organizations like WADA and the IOC might insist on Valieva's complete exclusion from the Olympics as a punitive measure. Conversely, Valieva's legal representatives could argue for leniency or a reduced penalty, which could directly impact her eligibility to compete in the games (AP News, 2022). Distributive strategies are characterized by their assertiveness and a tendency t...
