The Authoritative Management Style
The success of an organization significantly depends on its leadership and management. While the two terms do not mean the same thing, they are interconnected (Hardesty, 2011). Management entails controlling a group of people or a set of entities towards meeting a goal. On the contrary, leadership refers to one’s ability to influence or motivate others to work towards the success of an organization. In my internship experience and independent research, I have had the privilege of interacting with leaders of different management styles. The most memorable one whom I have observed was my College principal, who used an authoritative management style in running the institution.
An authoritative management approach is one in which the leader is in total control of the organization. Authoritative leaders set the goals, develop the appropriate steps to achieve those goals, and oversees all the steps necessary to attain the goals with little contribution from the team members (Stobierski, 2019). This management style has been associated with some negative outcomes in terms of employee motivation. However, a closer analysis shows that the approach has some positive aspects. Managers who utilize this approach have some admirable characteristics that motivate employees in their roles. For example, authoritative managers tend to be more visionary and are firm but fair to their employees (Cardinal, 2020). These managers also give their employees clear direction and motivate them through persuasion and feedback on their work performance.
This management style is also known as visionary management style and its main goal is to provide the employees with a long-term direction. Given the dynamic nature of the business sector, each management approach depends on the prevailing circumstances. Therefore, an authoritative manager will know when to use a certain management technique that will motivate his employees (Dodson, 2015). Therefore, despite the negative perception about this management style, it also has specific instances when it should be used. One of the conditions that demand its application is when the employees require clear standards and directions to operate more effectively. It is also applicable in cases where the manager has complete trust from his subordinates. In such cases, the manager can readily make the decisions on behalf of the management team.
