Adaptive Organizational Leadership in a Global Pandemic

Essay Instructions:

Search the online Fortune 500 list for the current year and locate a global company that includes a senior leader practicing adaptive leadership skills. Write an essay that identifies the company and explores how this senior leadership applied adaptive skills to lead the organization while dealing with the COVID-19 restrictions.
Relate these organizational actions to the personal experience you described in our Module 1 discussion forum. (Here is my discussion forum post):
While organizations consistently are faced with changes the COVID-19 pandemic seemed to be catalytic in shining a light on areas organizations needed to implement change. Some organizations were not operating in a telework/telecommute environment prior to lockdowns brought on by the pandemic. This was a change that happened quickly relying on fast decision making. Adaptive leadership involves the practical application of solutions within organizations that guide leaders to identifying the important areas of focus of the operation while discarding what can be done without. Adaptive leadership takes things a step beyond problem solving by addressing challenges and creating solutions.
Leaders are generally faced with major decision making but what distinguishes adaptive leadership is the willingness to be open to feedback, readiness for change, and skill with adaptive challenges, and volatility to shift direction when the time comes. In times of crisis this leadership technique proves to rise to the occasion as seen during the COVID-19 pandemic. Organizations globally needed to transition business strategies to accommodate the pandemic climate that required physical locations to temporarily close or operate with less in-person staff. This interruption of work processes presented an opportunity for the adaptive leadership to showcase its ability to impact organizations and overcome challenges. The unique set of principles in adaptive leadership such as:
- Emotional intelligence: understanding the feelings of others
- Organizational justice: being open and honest
- Development: willingness to try new things
- Character: earning respect from those you lead
are keys in why this style of leadership in time of crisis and normal operation tend to achieve company goals. The workforce feels heard and supported and more likely to remember the mission of the organization because of the trust that has been built.

Adaptive Organizational Leadership in a Global Pandemic
One of the defining features of adaptive leadership is the ability of an organization to manage crises. Such a crisis can be as pervasive as the Covid-19 crisis, the pandemic facing the world today. As a result, the role of leadership has become increasingly important in driving companies towards achieving their end goals and sustainability. As leaders in Fortune 500 companies, organizations have been striving to maintain a competitive edge while still maintaining relevance in the corporate world (Gowers, 2021). Leadership adaptation, in this case, is all about becoming central and addressing matters that emerged as more urgent, including the safety and wellbeing of staff members, before handling issues related to adaptation. As with most organizations, the Corvid epidemic has posed a significant challenge to business models requiring adjusting learning programs to meet customers' growing needs (Tinker & Latta, 2020). As a result, companies in the Fortune 500 have started to respond with changes in how they are providing services, the way they have structured their infrastructure, expertise, and equipment in fighting the persisting epidemic.
Besides providing protective equipment to employees, Fortune 500 companies are devising ways to share infrastructure with other companies, which allows for data and technology sharing. Other measures include keeping staff employed, insured, and paid for services offered. In ensuring this, many Fortune 500 companies have resorted to the work-at-a-home model where employees are being encouraged to fulfill their duties from the comfort of their desktops or laptops, provided they have an Internet connection that can allow them to connect with their corporate network. Leaders in the corporate world have increasingly focused on distinct elements, including situational awareness, decision-making, energy, and communication. Regarding situational awareness, leaders have focused on monitoring risk factors, case counts, and risk factors, among other aspects associated with the disease outbreak. This has been essential in monitoring the status of public healthcare at all levels, including the state, local and national levels.
Organizations such as Amazon have been at the forefront, building a renewed focus on customers and the company’s capabilities (Gupta, Fung & Murphy, 2021). By focusing on the competitive edge that the company has been able to build, the organization has focused on establishing new cadres to establish a middle bench with the necessary skills to cut across skill banks and view technology as an insight to profit-making and increase in skills. Further, leaders at the top of the organization have been continuously looking for ways to further the company’s goals (Tinker & Latta, 2020). The return on client investment has arguably been remarkable for the organization concerning revenue stream advancement. First, as with many economic disruptions, adaptive leaders are finding that talent is rushing in several unpredicted ways. Even before the epidemic, the company had ev...
