US college education is among the most expensive among the developed countries in the world. According to an article by Amanda Ripley, “Why Is College In America So Expensive?”, the US is second to Luxembourg, in terms of college education financial obligation per student. The high cost of education, as noted in an article by the New York Times in 1875, substantially rose, requiring students to fork more finances to attain a place in college. There are a number of reasons that have been linked to the rising cost of college education. Among the most noticeable causes of the rising cost of college education in the US are the increase in spending on student apartments, meals, and student welfare such as sports. US college education is expensive because of increases in ancillary services and changes in education policies. The result is a decline in the quality of education and measures by the learning institutions to raise money to facilitate their operations.
There are several aspects that have led to a rise in college education fees in the US, as identified by various researches and presented in the article by Ripley. Ripley (2018) explains that higher education has been a concern for most Americans since the 19th century. A report by the OECD as noted in the article states that on average, students are required to pay close to $30,000 a year, which is almost double the amount of fees students pay in other developed nations. The insights highlight the disparity in the amount of fees paid by students in the US and those in developed countries. Notably, a majority of developed and developing nations have taken necessary steps to reduce the amount of college fees, with a third of developed nations offering free college educations for students. But the case of America is different, and despite states receiving different budget cuts, the cost of higher education can still be a hassle. The US ranks among the top spenders on student welfare in housing and other ancillary services. The financial obligation for the families and money from the public coffers is about $3,370 (Ripley, 2018). Ripley provides these insights to convince the audience about the issue of increased college fees in the US and its implications for students and families. Most students in American higher education institutions live away from their homes, requiring that the educational institutions provide improved living facilities that push the overall cost of college education. 
Another reason that Ripley points to for the increase in college education fees in the US is the rise in cost from payment of staff in educational institutions. Ripley argues that on average, $23,000 is spent annually by each student for payment of staff that is significantly higher than similar costs in Finland, Germany, among other countries (Ripley, 2018). She explains that part of the reason for the increase in staff cost is the fact that college education is a service offered by qualified staff, and those offering the services have college degrees.
