I was a healthy person like other young people before I was 19 years old. My health situation changed when I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, a disease that can be prevented but not curable after my 19th birthday. When I first learned about my sickness, I lost my head because I knew my life had changed. I was in the hospital for a long time and got the insulin pump that connects with my body to maintain my endocrine system. At the same time, I felt how hard it is for people with chronic illnesses to manage their health. In China, where I come from, public health management should be taken seriously in future development. I want to work toward developing public health management and earn a master's degree.
I chose nutritional science as my major in undergraduate school. By learning knowledge in this field, I have known how the diet works on human body health. It can help people improve their health by eating various food types like vegetables, meats, dairy, or health care products. In the beginning, I got an on-campus job working in an Asian restaurant as a cashier. This job made me familiar with how the food service system works. This job closely connects with our serve safe class, where I learned how to safely run a food service system like a restaurant or dining hall.
