In short, the story is that there was a beautiful lady who wanted to marry a man she truly loved. But her father wanted his daughter to marry a successful, wealthy man. Sennyo escaped from her house and followed her lover. A few years had passed. One day, Sennyo’s husband (lover) thought that it was time to see his father-in-law and should tell him that they lived happily and even had two children. I think the real Sennyo should be the beautiful woman that Ochu left in the boat. A Zen master tells a story of a beautiful lady known as Sennyo, the daughter of Chokan in Kona-sho, China (“Koan Sennyo”, 2022). While her father desired her daughter marries a young man by the name Hinryo, Ochu who was a distant relative, loved her as they grew up together. The young man whom Sennyo’s father wanted to marry his daughter appeared to be industrious and with all the qualities that the best suitor would have. Hinryo was keen to succeed in his career at the Human Province in China, and this quality made Sennyo’s father wish he would be his daughter’s husband. To fulfill her father’s desires, Sennyo got engaged to Hinryo and Ochu gave up upon learning about the engagement. While leaving his boat, Ochu notices a shadow of a beautiful woman at the show, only to discover it was Sennyo running after him. However, Sennyo had been married for five years and had two children with Hinryo, but the marriage did not seem to work. In the boat, Ochu left Sennyo and decided to visit his father-in-law who confirmed that his daughter had been ill-taken for a long time. Logically, this could imply that the woman Ochu left in the boat was not the real Sennyo. Nevertheless, I believe this was the real love spirit of Sennyo that Ochu knew and wanted to marry. Even after the father of Sennyo asks Ochu who the real Sennyo was, Ochu should have identified the woman in the boat to be the real Sennyo as one can be married due to societal pressures. Chokan only wanted Hinryo to be his daughter’s husband because he thought he would be successful. However, the two, Ochu and Sennyo had deep love that was hard to break.
I anticipate the ending of the story to be Ochu finally marrying Sennyo. The love they shared since they were young reflects the incident of Sennyo’s spirit meeting with Ochu while on the boat. As we grow up, we get connected to our close friends and share happiness, sorrow, and a lot more experiences that bring us closer. This same connection is seen in Ochu and Sennyo’s relationship which is cut short by Chokan’s wish for...
