He has focused on macroeconomics and labor economics research. Such research involves an analysis of the job market and the reason as to why graduates are not performing well in allocated jobs. Therefore, this is an indication that the argument of the author was well researched according to his knowledge on the subject. Labor economics touches on the need for competent employees who have gained the necessary skills in school. Carl uses a serious tone in passing across his arguments. For example, “I don't claim that giving F's will solve all of the problems, but I do argue that unless and until we start failing those students who should be failed, other suggested solutions will make little progress toward improving education” (Singleton, 1984). The author provides several reasons as to why more F’s should be allocated to students. The reasons are evidence to his argument that the Fs are necessary for solving the problems facing America's education system. In addition, he presents logical arguments in support of the thesis. For instance, the author argues out that some of the students get A’s that they have not worked for and turn out to be incompetent in the market place. In a real sense, the job market is specific about the kind of skills that would ensure productivity in different jobs. Therefore, if a graduate is not competent enough, then they would not be in a position to achieve organizational goals. The American economy needs to grow, and this can be ensured by releasing qualified graduates in the job market. As well, the author has explained his arguments hence making them logical. Rebuttal section Giving students more F’s would result in demoralization when it comes to classwork. A student would not be motivated to study because no matter how much effort they employ in studying, their lectures would still consider their work to be insufficient and end up giving them F’s.
