Artie as the Real Narrator of the Survivor’s TaleNameInstitutional AffiliationDateArtie as the Real Narrator of the Survivor’s TaleThe Holocaust survivor's tale has been presented to us by two different people; Vladek and Artie. Vladek on one side narrates the occurrences as they happened since he was an eyewitness. Artie on the other side is an eye witness to his father's testimony (Vladek). In my view, the real survivor's tale is that of Artie. He was not there when the Holocaust took place and therefore he relies on the account given to him by his father Vladek. Artie presents the events in a clear and easy to understand manner even though we know that he was not there at the time. He is only relying on his memory. The Holocaust was a genocide that occurred between the 1941 and 1945. It was perpetrated by the nation of Germany under the leadership of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party CITATION Ham98 \l 1033 (Hamida, 1998). During the period, six million Jews were murdered by the Nazi Party while the others were deemed to be undesirable in the community. The ones who were seen as undesirable in the community were the Roma people, homosexuals, and the non-Jewish minorities.
Artie who is from a Jewish family survived the Holocaust, and as such he informs us how the events happened as he was told by his father Vladek. Artie uses the account to make sure that people do not forget the various horrors that happened. In explaining the survivor's tale, Artie does not rely on the accounts alone that were given by his father; he also uses the account to explore the troubled relationship that he had with his parents and his Jewish entity. As the real narrator of the Survivor's Tale, Artie recognizes that narrating the Holocaust experiences of his father is a big responsibility and as such he struggles hard with the pressure that comes with that responsibility.
As an artist, Artie uses visual metaphors that define the situation. The use of the visual metaphors is one of the attributes that is found in the Maus, and it makes a person get to know how the Holocaust took place. You are supposed to understand the meaning of each of the visual arts so that you can understand the narration. He uses the animal heads in place of the human faces CITATION Sau92 \l 1033 (Saul, 1992). Each of the animals used presents each ethnic group or nationality that was affected by the Holocaust. Besides binding Artie with the people he is about to write about, the visual metaphors provide him with an opportunity to develop many anxieties about the narration that he is about to give.
Artie brings out the aspect of feelings during and after the Holocaust. This aspect is not clearly observed in the narrations of Vladek. Vladek, on his side, denies any feelings and as such appears to have failed his wife, Anja who is the mother of Artie. Due to this, Artie asks the psychotherapist who is also a survivor, "I can't begin to imagine how Auschwitz felt like." The therapist then replies, "What it felt like? Hmmm, How can I explain? Boo!” CITATION Art86 \l 1033 (Art, 1986).<...
