Les Misérables Essay
Les Misérables (translated in English as The Wretched Ones) is a classic novel written by Victor Hugo. The story is set in France and covers a period of about two decades, from 1815 to 1932. Through the narrative, Hugo narrates issues concerning the history of France, urbanization of Paris, political issues, religion, equity, and morality. Various tropes are applied in order to advance the narrative in the novel. In Les Misérables, we see Jean Valjean released from 19 years of detention after being accused of stealing bread because her sister was starving. This is the beginning of the tale that employs diverse tales, such as religion, to reveal the themes highlighted above. The essay highlights the various tropes employed in the novel regarding how the characters within the novel.
One of the prominent tropes used throughout the novel is irony. There are numerous instances where irony is applied to explain diverse issues and elevate the narrative. When Bishop rides on a donkey on his arrival to the city of Senez, he quipped that he hoped that the throng was never outraged because he had imitated Jesus by using a donkey. On the other hand, the people believed that a donkey was not worthy of the dignity of Myriel. In this regard, it was ironic because what the Bishop perceived as something honorable, people regarded it as worthless. In addition to this instance being an Irony, it is also a fairy tale because he alludes to himself being like Jesus Christ.
