It is essential to ensure that the selected negotiation approaches should be ideal for establishing effective relationships among the conflicting parties and should also help in increasing the capacity and potential of the parties involved in a conflict to resolve the prevalent issues. The literature examines and evaluates the various tools that mediators can apply to help conflicting parties in dealing with their disputes.
Tough talk
Mediators apply this tool in negotiations where firm and substantial measures should be taken depending on the problem between the different parties involved. Additionally, this tool is common among the great powers that talk tough with intentions of backing up diplomacy through the use of threats and sanctions that are aimed at achieving the intended objectives (Hampson & Zartman, 2015). For example, the United States has used tough talks to solve the conflict between North Korea and South Korea.
Straight talk
This mechanism requires that things are told the way they are.
