James Baldwin: Author Introduction
James Baldwin remains among the most influential and famous African American authors whose work, like any other author, was influenced by the environment in which he grew in. He was born of a single mother and never knew his father. His mother, Emma Jones, was among the thousands who fled the American South during the era of the great migration (Biography). He also grew up in an era where the Civil Rights Movement was gaining momentum, and the prejudice against people of color had deeply entrenched American society. Baldwin developed two core themes from his experiences as an African American in his literary work.
The central theme is social and political activism. On his return from Paris in 1957, the Civil Rights legislation was being discussed in Congress. Two of his essays highlight the struggle for social and political freedom, including The Hard Kind of Courage and Nobody Knows my Name. While writing about the social and political struggle, he aligned his notions with the Congress of Racial Equality (Azakarin).
