THEORY X AND THEORY Y
Theory X and Theory Y are two sets of theories on the assumptions of human behavior and human nature. These theories are very important in practice management. For example Theory by Frederick Taylor in his theory, emphasizes more on efficiency. According to Fredrick Taylor for an organization to improve productivity, managers must learn to optimize and simplify jobs. On the other hand, Theory Y by McGregor represents an optimistic view of human nature. According to this theory, people are creative, industrious and they assume responsibility. People can also exercise self-control. Managers who are steady with Theory X have a different managerial style compared to managers who are steady with theory Y.
McGregor Theory Y
In the 1940s, the human relations approach to management was the main management school of thought. McGregor and Fredrick Taylor came up with two theories that focused on worker's compensation selection and training, management and human approach top issues like supervisory styles and jib satisfaction. McGregor came up with the theory of motivation referred to as Theory Y. According to Theory Y, the management has the responsibility of organizing all the elements that enhance productivity in an organization (McGregor, 1966). According to Theory Y, Management is the process of motivating employees, controlling the actions of employees, modifying and changing their behavior and directing their efforts. McGregor also asserts that people should be resistant to organizational needs of there is no active Intervention by the management. Employees must be rewarded, persuaded, controlled and punished by the management. Managers believe that if employees are given better conditions, most employees will want to work well. Managers believe that job satisfaction is doing an excellent job and it is a motivation by itself. In Theory Y, managers will always do everything possible to get rid of the barriers that can prevent employees from discovering their abilities. This creates enthusiasm in the workplace.
Taylor Theory X
In Theory X, Taylor proposed that for an organization to improve productivity, managers must learn to optimize and simplify jobs.
