Transitioning across human development life stages is a process that requires keen attention and care as it is susceptible to ineffective transitioning if a person’s desires and needs are neglected. Erikson contends that human beings undergo eight distinct stages, with each phase having a new challenge that must be mastered to successfully transition to the next stage (Kartkouti, 2014). Children and adults differ by each group’s needs when transitioning from one life development stage to another. For example, a child between the ages of zero and two is concerned with achieving the virtue of hope. Contrary, an adult of sixty-five years and above yearns to acquire the virtue of wisdom. Therefore, it is crucial to understand each group’s needs to create an environment for successfully transitioning to the next stage. Theoretical support for development in children and adults reveals that aspects such as communication, environment, and empathy are critical in influencing life development transitioning positively.

The interview questions revealed Sam, a male five years of age, falls in the child category. Besides, he had hearing issues. Sam is to transition successfully to the next stage, ensuring his emotions and behaviors are stimulated. This objective could be achieved through engaging with toys. This assertion is cemented theoretically by Vygotsky’s claim that playing positively impacts child development and growth (Bodrova, Germeroth, & Leong, 2013). The main features of a “real” play are creating an imaginary situation, constantly changing roles, and adhering to rules dictated by specific roles. In addition, playing is attributable to self-regulation. For example, a child playing with a patient is more likely to refrain from playing with an attractive toy such as a stethoscope basing on the logic that this toy is associated with a doctor’s repertoire and not a patient’s. This comprehension, in turn, compels a child to relate with the environment while at the same time building having positive attitudes towards different life aspects.
Physical and cognitive developments are also some of the course’s objectives. In particular, the course was concerned with understanding how Sam would relate to the environment. According to Erikson’s theory of psychosocial development, children between ages 2 and 4 can develop physically and cognitively in a positive way by parents and guardians ensuring these children are offered security (Kartkouti, 2014). A child falling into this age category often battles with autonomy versus shame and doubt conflict. Erikson’s theory argues that to overcome this conflict, parents and guardians must be patient and encouraging while at the same time encouraging autonomy. In essence, showing compassion will positively influence a child’s mind making the majority of their decisions have sense.
