Essay Instructions:

The pre-synthesis project can be done individually or as a group. If you'd like to be in a group, then let me know who you would like to work with.
Having read over the previous slides, you now know that the synthesis paper must be written on the topic of literacy. For the Pre-Synthesis Essay Project, you will EACH find, summarize and present information on the topic you or your group has been assigned. The article from the link cannot be used as a summary piece, you must find another, different source. These sources can be Ted Talks, Blogs, Academic Journal Entries, Book or Magazine articles, Movies, etc...
This assignment will result in a resource bank on these topics.
You will write a descriptive summary of your chosen source. This means that someone else should have a pretty good idea of what the source was about without having to read it for themselves.
You or Your group can create a google page/doc that you can send/share with me and I will be able to share it to our UWP 7 Google Docs page.
Include the citation for your source.
* You may be creative in the way that you present your information include things like videos, PowerPoint presentation...or just simply collect each group members' summary and compile them together. If you are on your own, then just send me it through Google Docs.
Step 1 for Synthesis Project
The first step for the Synthesis Project is to figure out what type of literacy you'd like to investigate and write about. Our pre-synthesis activity will help everyone to gather resources (hopefully lessening) the amount of research you have to do if you decide to do your Synthesis on one of the areas of literacy covered by that activity. If not you'll have to come up with your own sources.
To help walk you through the process, I'd like us all to work with the area of "functional literacy." The definition of Functional Literacy (on UNESCO's site is that Functional Literacy "refers to the capacity of a person to engage in all those activities in which literacy is required for effective function of his or her group and community and also for enabling him or her to continue to use reading, writing and calculation for his or her own and the community’s development.

Functional competency helps achieve reading comprehension, but this goes beyond reading, writing, and writing, where there is a deep understanding of texts. Adult literacy also requires digital literacy skills as part of Functional Literacy competencies.
