The Entry-Level Training by the U.S. Marine Corps
Commonly known as boot camp, the entry-level training by the U.S. Marine Corps serves as a gateway to more advanced training aimed at transforming ordinary civilians into professionals within the Military Occupational Specialties (MOSs). Since the Marine Corps does not anticipate the recruits to graduate from the boot camp with complete values and identities orientation, which may also be termed as professional military attributes and traits, training often takes time to instill these attributes (Miller, 2022). Values instilled throughout training beginning from entry-level to advanced levels of training include courage, honor, critical thinking, and marine identity. Nevertheless, there is a lack of intermediate and advanced schools for some MOS’s as seen today. Besides the lack of intermediate and advanced schools, the military needs to consider promotions in regards to the completion of chiefs, intermediate, and advanced courses, the need to push recruits and marines through the training, and reinforcement of standards throughout the training or schooling.
The Army needs to monitor promotion levels of professionals upon the completion of chiefs, intermediate, and advanced courses and the selection to higher commands among qualified officers to fill intermediate and senior positions. In addition, there should be monitoring and assignment of the officers to serve at training institutions with an aim of providing professionals with relevant knowledge in their fields. Officers or successful senior leaders with the relevant knowledge need support to teach, mentor, and coach other future Army leaders through the completion of these courses. According to Orsi (2017), professional military education (PME) serves a significant role in the promotion and advancements of professionals. For instance, General J. Lawton Collins, the Chief of Staff of the Army (CSA) effectively prepared for future assignments by attending the Army Industrial College as well as the Army War College before serving as an instructor later in his life. This preparation broadened his horizons to become suitable for future assignments, responsibilities, and promotions.
