The Dark Side of Human Behaviors
The 'The Use of Force' by William Carlos Williams is a first-person narration told by a doctor about an experience during his practice. The first-person and subjective point of view allows the audience to notice the changes in the narrator's mind. The doctor is the protagonist, and the antagonist is Mathilda, his young patient. The latter's parents comprise secondary characters in the story.
The author presents a situation that explores the dark side of human behaviors through the doctor's character. For example, the narrator loses his professionalism and transforms into a sadistic character by using excessive force on a young patient. He seems to find delight in his actions, which could be driven by his authority over the patient as a knowledgeable practitioner. He instills fear in Mathilda, who reacts aggressively to defend herself from harm.
The story's structure includes techniques such as backstory and foreshadowing. The conversation in the plot is not differentiated from the narration by quotations, allowing the narrator's thoughts to interact with his observations of the patient and her parent's reactions. While the narrator does not employ figurative language, he describes the action with a simple but graphically suggestive dialect. This improves the flow of the writing and emphasizes the author's perspective. His view is reduced to what he observes about himself and the other characters. Nonetheless, he is observant and gives insight into other characters' behavior and feelings. For instance, he explains how they looked at him with a lot of nervousness and distrust.
