Effective Approaches in Leadership and Management
Introduction
The delivery of quality patient care is a common objective shared by healthcare providers across the diverse healthcare systems worldwide. Achieving this objective requires delivering safe, affordable, and high quality care services to patients. However, the healthcare sector faces a wide range of challenges limiting the realization of the novel objective. For instance, the rising cost of healthcare in the U.S. and other countries worldwide, coupled with the high rates of nurse turnover, are some of the key deterrents to the delivery of quality patient care facing most healthcare providers. Mitigating the adverse implications of issues such as nurse turnover on patient safety and quality of care requires the application of effective nursing leadership and management approaches. Provided herein is an exploration of how nursing leaders and nursing managers utilize effective nursing leadership and management approaches in addressing the issue of nurse turnover toward ensuring the delivery of safe and quality patient care within a healthcare facility.
Nurse Turnover and its Impact on Patient Safety and Quality of Care
The high rate of nurse turnover is increasingly growing into a major human resource problem for the global healthcare sector, with equally adverse implications on the ability of healthcare providers to deliver safe and quality patient care. According to Dewanto (2018), the global nurse turnover rate ranges from 15 to 44%, with the United States recording a national average rate of 19.1%. The high rates of nurse turnover account for the problem of nursing shortage facing most healthcare systems worldwide, with subsequent disruptions in the provision of patient care services CITATION Ant18 \l 1033 (Antwi, 2018). Nurse turnover leads to increased costs of operation for healthcare facilities in the recruitment and training of newly hired nurses CITATION Dew18 \l 1033 (Dewanto, 2018). The loss of experienced nurses creates an imbalance in the nursing staff between the remaining nurses and the replacement or the newly employed nurses. Such an outcome disrupts the existing working relationships within the healthcare facility and may even breed reluctance among the experienced nurses to teach or mentor the newly recruited nurses CITATION Dew18 \l 1033 (Dewanto, 2018). Thus, the human resource problem further creates heavy workloads for the remaining nurses, exposing them to a higher likelihood of committing medical incidents that may harm patients. It suffices, therefore, that nurse turnover has an overall effect of increasing the cost of care and jeopardizing patient safety, which limits the ability of healthcare providers to deliver quality patient care.
Demonstrating Professional Standards of Practice in Rectifying Nurse Turnover
It is essential for nursing leaders and nursing managers to embrace and utilize the standards of professional performance outlined in the American Nurses Association’s (ANA) standards of professional nursing practice CITATION Ame22 \l 1033 (Association, 2022). For instance, both the nursing leaders and nursing managers should demo...
