However, these women are also powerful in their own way, and albeit subtly, Fitzgerald does showcase their power in the story. Their power and limit to the same can be compared to how the theme of power is showcased in Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises. In these stories, women are depicted quite differently, but their show of power and limit of the same happens to share a few similarities. Female power in the two stories is first showcased through the beauty of the women. The women’s descriptions in the stories show that they were indeed beautiful, and their attraction was memorable. While writing about Daisy’s beauty in The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald (1925, p. 10) notes that “Her face was sad and lovely with bright things in it, bright eyes and a bright passionate mouth, but there was an excitement in her voice that men who had cared for her found difficult to forget: a singing compulsion, a whispered ‘Listen,’ a promise that she had done gay, exciting things just a while since and that there were gay, exciting things hovering in the next hour.” Daisy was captivating and beautiful, and this drew powerful men to her. However, there is one person that she drew, influenced the trajectory of his life, and eventually, he succumbed because of his obsession with her. Gatsby was not the first person to notice the beauty of Daisy, however, his obsession with her grew to the point that it contributed to his death.
