The focus of Ellison's "king of the bingo game story" is on a single person who is attempting to win the bingo jackpot. The protagonist is portrayed as being in a terrible predicament (Ellison, 1914). He's broken and starving, and the lady he loves is on the verge of passing away. As we will explain, the author has been able to characterize this protagonist from three perspectives: ideas and opinions, speech and interaction, and social status (Ellison, 1914).
* The reader is taught to grasp the character's circumstances through his thoughts from the very first words of the novel. The way the character thinks reflects his current situation. We learn the truth about him, that he is broke, and that he is from the south, among other things. However, because the author does not name the character, it is difficult to figure out who he is (Ellison, 1914). Even so, one can at least surmise who he is based on his way of thinking and viewpoint, as the author has been able to use these tools to articulate his character.
* In the form of speech and dialogue the author occasionally adopts what we imagine is the protagonist's dialect in the novel (Ellison, 1914). This serves to remind us that the protagonist is from the south and that his differentiation from others around him is distinct, strengthening our impression of the protagonist as an outcast.
