The story represents a black woman, Phoenix, who takes a journey to the old town of Natchez to seek medication for her grandson. In the journey, she is faced with internal and external challenges. She was among individuals who faced slavery, oppression, and the civil war of black people. She sees a snake but is not afraid of wild animals on the journey. At the top of the hill, she is grateful for the freedom of the black people. Also, she meets with a hunter and his two dogs. Even though he was nice at first, he ended up being a racist and threatening her with a gun. The receptionist treats her as a charity case at the hospital. Still, the nurse arrives and treats her with dignity, acknowledging Phoenix travels there every time to get medication for her grandson.
In the story, Phoenix demonstrates a determination to achieve her goal of reaching the town to get medication for her grandson. She is determined to get to the city no matter the obstacles on the way. The path seems rocky, long, and full of obstacles. However, even after being threatened with a gun by the white man with two dogs, she is not afraid. This means that she had witnessed the killing and social injustices against black people. The white man seems to be nice to her at first but turns a racist when she tells Phoenix that he knows why black people travel to town to see Santa Claus. Also, she is aware of dangerous animals that hibernate in the forest, but this would not stop her from her mission. Finally, Phoenix admits that the snakes belong to God and thus have a place in the woods, and therefore nothing can stop her ( Wetly,1991).
Further, he displays wisdom when he arrives at the medical facility. She understood that the racial injustices were far from over; thus, she did not say anything when the receptionist saw her as a charity case.
