Globalization and technology have made it possible for people to interact and integrate all over the world with considerable ease. For instance, it is possible to disseminate information worldwide within a split of a second, courtesy of the huge strides achieved in technology. In a word, technology has converted the world into a global village, whereby the exchange of ideas and culture has been enhanced significantly. This scenario has also had a massive impact on domestic extremism because extremists can communicate and mobilize with great ease (Sheikh, 2022). Globalization has made it possible for extremist groups to attract foreign extremists, seek foreign support, and acquire weaponry.
Globalization and technology have given domestic extremists an easy time in spreading their tentacles by attracting and recruiting members from other countries and regions. Many extremist groups are increasingly using the internet to violently radicalize foreigners (Alava et al., 2017). Moreover, the internet has facilitated the rapid spread of extremist ideologies at a low cost. Online recruitment of members has become another common feature of domestic extremism. For instance, after the civil war broke out in Syria, ISIS used the internet to recruit and radicalize foreigners especially the youth (Mitts et al., n.d.). As a result, the group grew exponentially both in size and strength. Through technology, the extremist groups can train and militarize their members, including the foreign ones. Mostly, they use YouTube in this respect since it is easily accessible besides being safe to a huge degree. Consequently, they have managed to spread their ideologies and military operations across borders with remarkable ease. Foreigners play a crucial role because they introduce new propaganda ideas, which help domestic extremists scale up their modus operandi (Alava et al., 2017). They also use YouTube because it is difficult to trace the origin of the content posted. Moreover, members can comment and share the content with relative ease.
