Both Chopin in “Story of an Hour” and Chestnutt in “The Wife of His Youth” utilize different forms of irony to create some suspense to the reader. For example, when Mrs Mallady goes upstairs to mourn her husband, the reader becomes worried for Mrs Mallady, but when we find out that his death overjoys her, we develop suspense to know why she was happy. Similarly, Chestnutt uses dramatic irony by letting the reader know that Mr Ryder is Sam, whereas the guests do not know.
