Many Americans especially the middle class understand that the current minimum wage is not sufficient to lead a comfortable lifestyle. Ideally, the cost of living has drastically increased over the years mainly because of increased cost of consumer products. For this reason, the minimum wage should be raised to help low paid workers and also contribute to a boost in the economy.
Raising the minimum wage would go a long way in ensuring that families of low paid workers can get decent living and in the process eliminate poverty. As an economist, I am qualified to tell you that even though, many believe that raising the minimum wage would make it hard to find low-skilled workers, it would do the opposite. Many people without jobs would begin to find work even in the low-skilled industry because the pay will became a motivating factor. This means that a great number of Americans with very low income will have a footing and poverty levels would begin to decrease.
