Minimum wage and Airport Security
Introduction
Airports are critical areas that link a nation to the outside world since they allow people and goods to enter and leave a country through its terminals. In this perspective, the security of an Airport is supposed to be a national priority of any nation is ensuring that people who are expected to fulfill the mandate are motivated towards their duty. However, several research findings indicate that many of the workers at major Airports are less motivated since their pay is below the minimum wage. Various factors contribute to the poor pay of the security officers at the Airports that include the procedure being adopted by the airlines to award contracts to the private security companies to screen baggage. Many airlines award tenders to the lowest bidder to keep costs down; the security companies will also recruit airport workers and pay them below the minimum wage to make more profits; in the process, the security of the Airport is tolerated since the workers are not inspired to work. The frustrated employees are likely to leave their duties; hence, leading to high levels of employee turnover. This essay posits that improving the minimum wage of airlines workers shall increase the levels of safety at the Airports.

One of the problems that lead to low minimum wages among the airline workers is that they are being employed by the security agencies which would like to maximize their profits by paying workers poorly. The article by San Francisco International Airport (2016) provides a quality standards program (QSP) that ensures that safety, health, hiring practices, training, compensations and benefits and the equipment standards at the airport are improved to the required standards. The aim of the program is to ensure that the security companies provide quality services that do not tolerate the safety of the airport. In this perspective, it ensures that the employees that are being employed at the airport have completed the required training and the compensation and benefits being assigned to them are standardized. For instance, the QSP provides the rates that are $0.5 above the San Francisco Minimum Compensation Ordinance (MCO) and require the employers to provide other benefits such as health and paid offs to their employees. The findings of the article are supported by Hall (2015) who feels that the airline employees should be given a similar wage as their colleagues in transport and hospitality sector.
