Driving under the influence is a serious problem facing the society today. The number of road accidents caused by drinking under the influence is colossal. Owing to the number of fatalities associated with alcohol-impaired driving, the federal government came up with an ingenious plan to catch drunk drivers. The project involves positioning officer on the road to find drivers inauspiciously with BAC above the recommended limit in what is known as sobriety checkpoints. While this plan was seen as the perfect solution for the problem, the gains have been minimal, and there has been a public outcry that it limit individual liberty rights and constrain movement. The following paragraphs explore sobriety check point's failure and offer a solution to drinking under the influence.
In the United States, the numbers of registered vehicle are higher than the number of licensed individual to operate them. The situation is worsened by the fact that two-thirds of Americans drink alcohol making it a major health problem. Traffic crashes have been blamed on alcohol for over hundred years in the United States. According to CDC, in 2014, 9,967 people were killed in alcohol-impaired driving crashes. The figure makes 31% of all related traffic accidents in the United States. Additionally, 1.1 million drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or narcotics ("Impaired Driving: Get the Facts | Motor Vehicle Safety | CDC Injury Center", 2016).
Sobriety checks require officer to stop random vehicles and the law enforcement officers' uses gadgets to assess the drive's level of alcohol impairment. These stops are supposed to test the blood alcohol concentration (BAC). Currently, the accepted BAC is 0.8%. The roadblocks have been approved by the law to enforce drinking under the influence of substances.
