In the lead paragraph, Judith Graham captures the reader’s attention by asking a question to herself. She later elaborates the reason why she keeps worrying that Alzheimer disease might catch up with her during her old age. Judith’s father, sister, maternal grandfather, and two maternal uncles had dementia-related health issues (Graham, 2020). At this point, the author uses logos and pathos to show the reader that since dementia is genetically inherited, she might suffer from it at a particular age in her life. The logic she uses is that since other family members had been diagnosed with Alzheimer, there exists a probability that she will have it as well. Readers are likely to get emotional after seeing all people that the author has lost to an illness that she might as well suffer from during old age.
