Abstract
Solar, biomass, and tidal energy are alternative energy sources that are viable in South Florida. The renewable energy sources are naturally replenished and help reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and air pollution associated with fossil fuels. The renewable sources of energy that lead to lower costs, less ecological impact, and meet the consumers demand energy are preferred. Considering the advantages and drawbacks of using renewable sources of energy is necessary to evaluate what is most suitable in South Florida.
Renewable energy refers to energy sources that are produced continuously and are inexhaustible compared to fossil fuels. They are mostly categorized into conventional renewable energies, which are hydropower, and non-conventional renewable energies such as solar, wind, biomass, geothermal, and tidal energy. South Florida has good solar exposure rates compared to the rest of the U.S. and solar energy together with biomass remains the main source of renewable energy. The solar, biomass, and tidal energy sources are viable alternative energy sources in South Florida, but there are also drawbacks that would limit leveraging these sources.
Solar energy is a renewable energy source obtained from the sun for electricity and heating making it useful when it is sunny, mostly during summer. Solar energy is an abundant source of energy in Florida one of the sunniest states in the United States. The growing demand for solar energy has reduced the cost of solar energy, but solar energy fluctuates throughout the day. Atmospheric conditions, such as long periods of heat and humidity, clouds and fog limit solar energy generation (Ugli, 2019). Furthermore, solar energy is unavailable during the night, highlighting the need to optimize solar energy generated during the data and storing the energy. Nonetheless, solar energy is an important source of solar energy in South Florida. Technology is needed to improve solar energy generation as there is low efficiency in terms of the electrical energy it can converted, but there is progress to address this through research.
Solar energy is a renewable and sustainable source of energy that does not require extracting raw materials, but rather solar panels and batteries to store energy. Since South Florida has abundant sunshine solar energy remains a popular source of renewable energy. Solar panels are a viable option in far-flung areas and locations that are not easy to access (Sandwell et al., 2016). Thus, to leverage solar energy, there is a need to identify areas where the solar panels will be installed, and sometimes there is opposition to installation if the panels are near residences. There are high installation costs because of purchasing the solar panels, batteries, inverters, and other materials...
