Keats' poems exemplify the poetical expression of his concept of negative capability. He created the term as a way to encourage acceptance of the unknown. He emphasizes the need to pursue a sense of wonder and beauty at the expense of reason and favor (Keats, 2017). Negative capability means when a person can get into doubts, uncertainties, and mysteries without achieving reason or fact. Keats suggests that creativity involves experiencing the world as an uncertain place that results in a wide array of views.
Some examples of Keats' poems that have negative capability are "Ode to a Nightingale." The poem entails musings on mortality, without a solution on ways to handle the anxieties arising from impending death (Keats, 2017). The poem's theme is dark and gothic, leading Keats to disagree with an optimistic viewpoint. Another example is "Ode on a Grecian Urn" (Keats et al. 2003). The poet raises several questions concerning the figures being showcased on an urn. He relies on imagination to describe the scenes the pottery is representing.
