Having the concept of representing the struggles that homosexual people experience in their journey of accepting their difference, Randall Kenan’s debut in the industry of novels were with flying colors. This debut book gained the popularity of Randall Kenen as a contemporary American fiction writer was titled A Visitation of Spirits in the year 1989 (Hovis, 2019). The short introduction was a story that people could learn from and understand more about society before and now.
A Visitation of Spirits
The story circulated within the life of Horace Cross, who was a significant gifted child but is being haunted by his feelings of uncertainty about his sexual orientation. As the story progressed, Horace continued to struggle and then voiced out his difficulties to his cousin James Malachai Greene who eventually sought out that prayers could help his hardships. Horace, unable to defeat the challenges, continued to find an answer and stumbled upon studying magic, which was another turning point in his life. But despite continuing his actions of turning himself into a bird using magic, he was unable to, and rather things turned for worse. Horace was possessed by a demon while haunted by his memories of the past and eventually killed himself in front of his cousin Jimmy (Kenan, 1989).
This story showed several factors that can be studied and analyzed, from its plot to the literary devices and symbols. Coming from there, several symbolical representations can be seen from the novel, such as madness. In the scene where Horace accepts the idea of using magic, madness can already be observed.
