The pride and prejudice is set in the village of Longbourn and revolves around the family of Bennet who has five unmarried daughters. Their family land is inherited to their cousin, Mr. Williams and, therefore, this leaves Mrs. Bennet with no other option other than finding husbands for her daughters so that they can have a good life (Jane, 2017). Mr. Bennet does not show much concern about the future of the family and, spends most of his time in the library. Several events take place surrounding the daughter s of Bennet, and some of the events have been best described through the use of letters. The novel has incorporated various writing devices to bring out the story. Among such devices are letters which help in the development of characters, themes and the propelling of the narration.
The novel has an approximation of six main letters which play an important role in the propelling of the plot. The first letter was written by Mr. Collins, revealing his arrival. Therefore, this creates some level of curiosity to the readers because they do not know what to expect about the character of Collins. It's a way of keeping the readers interested in reading the whole play to get the full picture of the characters and the role that they are going to play in the novel. Later, he writes letters about the engagement of Darcy and Elizabeth and this is an indication that he is an important character in the plot which helps in passing across information. As well, other letters within the play have been used to pass information, which, in turn, helps in the unraveling of the events that make up the story. Also, Darcy writes letters to Elizabeth to explain his past and the dealings that he used to have with Wickham. Without such letters, Jane would have been required to do a lot of explaining regarding the events of the play. However, she avoids the use of too much dialog by writing letters. The letters provide precise information to the reader hence clearing the questions that they might have about some of the happenings of the letter. Therefore, the use of letters as a device of writing in pride and prejudice is a great way of propelling the plot without lengthy explanations.
In addition, the use of letters is an important aspect because they help in developing the characters. Through the writers that the various characters write, the reader is able to understand the kind of people that they are. As well, their actions, as described in the letters, tell more about their personalities. This helps in keeping the story interesting because all the characters have unique characteristics which differ from those of the other characters. For instance, the first letter written by Mr. Collins, announcing his arrival, creates anticipation of the role that he will play in the novel by showing us that he is a determined character.
