One of the greatest political achievement of President Thomas Jefferson was orchestrating the purchase of 827, 000 square miles of land which France, under the leadership of Napoleon, lay claim of ownership and control. The Louisiana Purchase in 1803, almost doubled the American territory giving rise to 15 new states along the Mississippi River at the cost of 15 million dollars. Under the leadership of Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe and Robert R. Livingston negotiated the deal with the French administration for the purchase of the land which had been ceded to the nation by Spain through a secret treaty.
