The goal of the précis is to explain the reading so well that even a family member or friend could understand the gist without their having read the text themselves. The Principles of Philosophy
Rene Descartes is a 17th century philosopher who forged new philosophical theories applauded for their truthfulness. It is believed that Descartes felt a need to answer philosophical questions in a rational manner by treading carefully so as to avoid the kind of condemnation suffered by Galileo for giving claims that offended the church (British Journal of Sports Medicine, 2006). Descartes wished to draw the line between introspection and sound clarity of thoughts rather than believing truths prescribed by authorities and tradition. The quote “I think therefore I am” stirred debates among rationalists and empiricists at the time when “mechanistic and mathematical” accounts in science are linked to all noticeable occurrences. Rationalists believe that our knowledge of the world are achieved through our sense experiences in certain means alone while empiricists claim that “sense experience” is the eventual basis of all our knowledge about the world (Markie, 2017).
