By saying that “poetry is not a luxury,” Audre Lorde implies that poetry is not the language of the elite. It is not the language that people need to trounce feelings and promote thought. Instead, it is a tool for everyone, especially women.
“The Transformation of Silence into Language and Action”
In “The Transformation of Silence into Language and Action,” Lorde implores everyone, and especially women, to break the silences that bring about differences between us. After a health scare, Lorde realized that she had to start speaking about all she was afraid of. Due to this action, she realized that she was better for it and encouraged others to do the same. Lorde pieces of advice women to become warriors in their own right. She does this because she knows that women often suffer in silence. As a poet, Lorde knows she is utilizing her warrior spirit.
