Introduction
In today’s society, “mad people” are subject to excessive stigma that they fear to seek help from relevant institutions and organizations. According to CAPA (n.d), various activists established movements to dispel the myths and misperceptions of people on individuals considered “mad.” The coalition against psychiatric assault established in 2003 formed an alliance to dismantle the stigmatized psychiatric system although they should prepare for what is in store in the future.
Historical Importance of the Coalition Against Psychiatric Assault
For a long time, antipsychiatry activists thought that all psychiatrists are bad and do not recognize human suffering. The Coalition Against Psychiatric Assault (CAPA) believe and acknowledge that human beings, especially mad people, experience immense suffering and that they are entitled to reliable help to alleviate pain. What the organization is against is forced "help" and misguided treatments that some psychiatrists subject their patients to (CAPA,n.d). Besides, the thought that antipsychiatry is misguided is entirely wrong because the system needs to receive criticisms so that marginalized groups can receive better and modern psychiatric care. Thus, using strategic activism, CAPA developed actions that oppose the violation of human rights.
