The musculoskeletal system is the organ system that enables humans to move. Aside from movement, it also influences the human body’s stability, form, and support. The musculoskeletal system is composed of the skeletal muscles, bones, ligaments, tendons, and joints.
In the specific scenario of a football player kicking a field goal, these structures help perform a forceful forward swing. The iliopsoas and the rectus femoris (part of the quadriceps muscle) act as hip flexors. The rectus femoris, a two-jointed muscle, acts as a hip flexor and a knee extensor along with the vastus medialis that concentrically contracts to perform the knee extension component of kicking a field goal. In contrast, the hamstrings muscle eccentrically controls the movement of the hip and knee. The leg muscles are the tibialis anterior, gastrocnemius, and soleus. The tibialis anterior is responsible for the concentric dorsiflexion of the ankle, and the gastrocsoleus complex is responsible for the eccentric contraction of the movement (Hajlotfalian et al., 2019). The bone structures involved in the hip, thigh, leg, and ankle are the pelvis, femur, tibia, fibula, and talus. The hip joint (acetabulofemoral joint), knee joint (tibiofemoral joint), and ankle joint (talocrural joint) are used when kicking a ball.
The different components of the musculoskeletal system have varying functions. The bones serve as the attachment of the muscles, supporting it as it contracts and relaxes to act. This can be likened to a lever, while joints serve as a fulcrum when the extremity performs the movement. The muscles contract, either concentrically or eccentrically, to move and act.
