1 A Nest is Noisy
An award-winning children’s book that can be recommended to parents of children between 5 to 8 years old is “A Nest Is Noisy”, written by Dianna Hutts Aston, and illustrations made by Sylvia Long. This is an informative book about the facts and beauty of nature. The illustrations feature various nests of animals in the wild, as well as different kinds of animals such as the hummingbird, the American alligator, platypus, etc. (Aston, 2017) This also has a poetic style of narrative while discussing the facts about nature, in addition to the beautiful and realistic illustrations. In this type of reading material which has pictures as well as a slightly advanced vocabulary and length of narration, many skills can be improved and developed. An example of a skill that can be promoted when this reading material is used in the classroom would be sentence construction and cohesion.
2 Little Fox in the Forest
A kind of book that not all parents usually choose for their children are wordless picture books, but a good recommendation is the book “Little Fox in the Forest” by Stephanie Graegin. This storybook revolves around the little girl searching for her stuffed fox that was stolen by a real fox and taken deep into the woods. The little girl, together with her friend, a little boy, goes in search of her stuffed fox on an adventure where they encounter a miniature village with extraordinary woodland creatures. This book is recommended and best suited for children 4 to 8 years of age (Graegin, 2017). Although at first wordless book do not seem to enhance much skill due to its lack of words and vocabulary, but on the contrary, this book, as well as other wordless picture books, promote wordplay, vocabulary development, and imagination. It encourages children to process, connect, and make meaning out of the illustrations, as well as retell the story in their own words.
Videos
1 Zoo Song
The Kids TV features nursery rhymes and songs producing various videos that can be used at home and in school. A good recommendation for a video from Kids TV is the “Zoo Song”. This is a song suitable for kids aged 2 to 5 years old. It shows a family of six going on a zoo trip. In this trip, they encounter animals such as the lion, giraffe, elephant, etc. The video also shows how each member of the family can help the animals needing assistance, while also showing the teamwork that they have as a group. The song is repetitive in some parts and mimics a normal conversation in a question and answer form (Zoo Song, 2018). This video can be used in various activities as well as for entertainment purposes of children while also promoting education and various skills. The video of the “Zoo Song” promotes language fluency in children.
2 ABC Song
Another video from the Kids TV featuring a song for the educational development of children is the “ABC Song”. This is suitable for children aged 2 to 5 years old. It is an animated cartoon that recites the alphabet as well as gives examples for each letter. Another good thing in this specific video is the emphasi...
