Released in 2006, The Namesake is an Indian-American movie by Sooni Taraporevala and Mira Nair. The story is inspired by a novel of the same name by Jhumpa Lahiri. The film features Irrfan Khan, Sahira Nair, Tabu and Kal Penn, and was released in March 2007 in the United States. It received positive reviews from national and international critics. Gogol, the protagonist of The Namesake, looks like a stiff and difficult person. The only time he is pliable is when he develops a friendship with some women. Throughout his life, Gogol shows arrogance and rudeness to others, even to his family members, and this makes us feel that he will never find true love and affection.
From the start of the movie until its end, Gogol does not prove himself to be a likable character. There are times when he shuns his family due to their cultural ties to India and wants them to act upon his advice. Deep inside, he is afraid that his family will embrace Indian culture and that he will have to do the same to stay with them. Doing so, America can reject him, and this may ruin his overall reputation in western society. In his mind, Gogol thinks that he will have to cut his ties or break his relationship with his family in order to be accepted by the West.
When he falls in love with Maxine, Gogol loses his stiffness and begins looking at the things from a different angle. For instance, Maxine asks him to stay with her in his family, and he agrees immediately. Similarly, he acts as the so...
