Comforts of a luxury cruise
The story follows David Forster’s journey on a luxury cruise in the March of 1995. The outcomes of David’s cruise are recorded in the writing known as shipping out. The beginning of the essay and the tittle itself indicate that David did not have a good time during the cruise. What makes the essay an interesting literary journalism is its flow and the manner in which it seems un-literary. It is not a delicate reading but rather, a simple narrative that people of all ages can understand. David uses his elasticity of prose and intricacy of his diction to capture the reader’s attention and make them want to know more about the seven-night journey across the Caribbean.
David’s writing style is unique and telling from the way he kicks off the narrative, it would have sounded completely different if it was written by another person. Had the story been told by another writer, it would have probably sounded like the regular magazine stories that follow rhetorical doubling and a transformation theme (Bogost & Ian 13). However, David Wallace is a special breed of a writer who uses his journalism experience and a touch of philosophy giving the reader a wide imagination of what it could have felt to be on the same cruise ship with the narrator. Wallace suggests that there is an unusual thing about the expensive cruise ships and the entire mass market in which they operate.
