• pay attention to daily things happening around you and see if you can apply what you learnedin LIN 201 to them.
Topic
• Anything about language or linguistics.
• Possible topics include (but are not limited to):
– Your reaction to a news/magazine article (or a blog/vlog entry, podcast, etc.) thatdiscusses endangered languages, new findings of language acquisition, or some new usagein English, etc.– Go to Google News and search “language”, “linguistics”, or words related to what welearned in class.∗ If you have any difficulty with finding one, let me or your TA know.– “Language watch” commentary: You can choose a controversial or striking usage inEnglish (or another language that you speak fluently) and write a commentary on it,highlighting the context of more usual usage and course content.∗ Do your friends do anything linguistically strange when they speak casually? Howabout when they text? What makes you feel strange?∗ If you use a language other than English, please be sure that you give adequateglossing and translation to explain the usage and its grammar!– Or something that you encountered in LIN201 that you would like to follow up.

For this assignment, I will react to a blog article on endangered languages. On the text, the author states that apart from clothing, food and architecture, one of the most significant and effective ways of understanding the culture and history of a nation is via its language. She writes that the central use of the English language is one of the main reasons behind the trend. Furthermore, the article asserts that one of the reasons for the death of a language is cultural destruction in the sense that a colonial power dominates another culture, thus suppressing the mother tongue of the natives (Chauvot, 2016). As a connection to what we learned in class, I think that languages “die” because they get consumed by other languages that have a higher phonological scope and a more considerable syntactic influence. Migration and change of environment also endanger a language.
The author provides her insight on the consequences of an endangered language. In this section, she states that losing an original language means way more than losing its vocabulary and understanding. The loss of a language reflects on the loss of the history of the linguistic group. The knowledge about a country, a region or a group of people entails having information about their culture, history and their initial local environment (Chauvot, 2016). For instance, if a scientist or a historian were to study about a country, they would need to know the names of basic things such as animals, plants and the place that the people grew in.
