Dear Honorable Rosa Parks,
I am pleased to be given an opportunity to address one of the most prominent figures in the realm of female rights activism. Your name may bring in a layman’s mind that the refusal to give up your seat to a white man followed by a huge seminal protest is but only one of the highlights of the story extending from your struggle since childhood. I appreciate how you have been engaged in investigating the cases of sexual assaults against black women as the branch secretary of Montgomery NAAP and engaging with black women to protect them against violence long before that memorable bus stop protest.
By writing this, I want to draw your attention to the fact that the issues at the center of your activism remain intact in subtle to evident forms in today’s American society. Women continue to be at the intersection of two unprivileged statuses, including that of being black and woman. Going through a few of your texts, I understand that you stood against both types of discriminatory status. You became the voice of women, victimized by men while given license by patriarch norms (Parks & Reed, 1994). At the same time, you demonstrated firm aversion to all forms of racism (Parks & Haskins, 2000). Both these issues are evident in American society while seen from today’s standpoint.
Even though the media has got vibrant and awareness at the public level and has seen a significant upsurge in all key matters, there is a critical gap between rhetoric and reality at the political level.
