I selected Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) as my preferred managed care model. From the healthcare leader’s perspective, it is undesirable that the traditional HMOs’ ineffective organizational controls substantially contribute to inefficient healthcare funds management and deteriorated patient care quality (David, 2020). In the same vein, HMOs are beneficial since they facilitate effective coordination between providers, which simplifies care for members as well as keeps costs down (Carnaroli, 2016). On the other hand, a patient views HMOs as a valuable approach to get medical care for a prepaid fee at a relatively lower cost. For example, the HMOs model is typically less expensive than preferred provider organizations (PPOs). However, patients are required to receive referrals from their “gatekeeper” or rather the primary care provider before they can see other specialists (Falkson & Srinivasan, 2020). This could potentially undermine a patient ability to access timely care.
As a leader, I would select the healthcare priority anchored on shifting from treatment of illness to health promotion and illness prevention. Populations disproportionately impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic are at a higher risk to develop oral illnesses and experience oral healthcare disparities at increasingly higher rates.
