From the Outside In: A Place for Indigenous Graphic Traditions in Contemporary South African Graphic Design
I believe there is a rising recognition that there is an increasing requirement for in-depth study into brief design answers. The more complicated the design challenge, the more capable a researcher the designer must be. Languages spoken and understood, cultural attitudes and practices, degrees of education and ways of thought, religious views, and so on vary greatly throughout South Africa. As a result, I would conclude that communication with or between them cannot be presumed to work as it could in a supposedly more homogeneous European or North American culture.
