Goal
Write a 1,500-1,750-word essay using five to seven academic resources in which you argue that a contested “case” involving the sale, trade, or donation of human organs fits (or does not fit) within a given category. A case may include a specific news article, story, or incident illustrating a dilemma or controversy relating to the exchange of human organs. The case does not need to be a court case.
Directions
Follow these steps when composing your essay:
1. Start by selecting a controversial case found in the media involving the sale, trade, or donation of human organs. For example, an appropriate case might include a story in the news about an organ broker, and the term to define might be “criminal.”
2. Decide what category you think your case belongs in, with the understanding that others may disagree with you about the definition of your category, and/or whether your chosen case matches your category.
3. In the opening of your essay, introduce the case you will examine and pose your definition question. Do not simply summarize here. Instead, introduce the issue and offer context.
4. To support your argument, define the boundaries of your category (criteria) by using a commonly used definition or by developing your own extended definition. Defining your boundaries simply means naming the criteria by which you will discuss your chosen case involving the sale, trade, or donation of human organs. If you determine, for example, that an organ broker is a criminal, what criteria constitute this? A criminal may intentionally harm others, which could be one of your criteria.
5. In the second part of your argument (the match), show how your case meets (or does not meet) your definition criteria. Perhaps by comparing or sizing up your controversial case to other cases can help you to develop your argument.
This essay is NOT simply a persuasive essay on the sale, trade, or donation of human organs. It is an argumentative essay where the writer explains what a term means and uses a specific case to explore the meaning of that term in depth.

Modern healthcare has made significant strides, such as making organ transplants possible, which has played a great role in improving health outcomes and extending human life expectancy. Although organ transplant has proven beneficial to human health, it has some negative implications on modern society. This discovery in the health sector has opened a loophole for illegal trade and trafficking of human organs. Cases presented in the United States justice system prove that human organ trafficking is a serious issue. One of such cases involved Izhak Rosenbaum, a human organ broker, who was found guilty of acquiring and transferring human organs for transplantation. Rosenbaum was involved in the human kidney business for approximately three years (Satel & Viard, 2017). Most of his sources were donors from developing countries, while his clients were rich individuals in developed countries, mostly the United States. The evidence presented in Rosenbaum’s trial in the United States Court of New Jersey illustrates that this illegal business is lucrative and involves different personnel, including healthcare professionals. Rosenbaum’s case falls into the criminal case category, which entails enforcing public codes of behavior that are codified into state laws.
The violation of the healthcare profession’s code of ethics and Hippocratic oath among the healthcare professionals involved in human organ trafficking qualifies Rosenbaum’s case as a criminal case. The code of ethics and the Hippocratic oath among healthcare practitioners require them to prioritize their client’s safety. However, this is not the case in the organ trafficking business. On most occasions, the donor’s health is jeopardized by this business (Aulisio, DeVita, & Luebke, 2007). Aspects like informed consent fail to provide the donors with an extensive explanation of the potential harm associated with organ donation and the surgical processes involved (Adair & Wigmore, 2011). The monetary factor is the main motive behind paid organ donation and organ trafficking business. Providing the donors with extensive details about the potential negative effects of the procedures involved might discourage them from taking part or even prompt them to quote higher prices for their organs. On the other hand, most recipients are often desperate to find organs and restore their health conditions. While the health professional is obligated to inform the recipients of the complications that might result from illegal organ acquisition, such information is often customized in favor of the business and due to monetary motives associated (Rizvi et al., 2009). In addition, the code of ethics and the Hippocratic oath cannot be enforced in an illegal situation. Based on these factors, Rosenbaum’s case entailed a violation of codes of behavior on healthcare professionals’ side, qualifying it as a criminal case.
