Human beings' interaction with the environment accounts for many negative implications on nature, with equally devastating effects on the planet. Humanity’s dependence on nature for its diverse needs across the socio-economic spectrum accounts for the global environmental crisis witnessed today. Human beings are outgrowing their dependence on nature and its showing across the world with nature’s perceived threats to humanity’s existence through the wide range of negative effects on the ecosystem. Former U.S. vice president Al Gore’s Earth in the Balance: Ecology and the Human Spirit reiterates his concerns for humanity’s wellbeing following its outgrowing dependence on nature for its sustainable growth and development. The widespread occurrence of catastrophic floods, natural fires, melting of the glaciers, and global warming or the overall rise in atmospheric temperatures are some of the adverse effects of humanity’s exerted dominance on nature. Al Gore’s publication in 1992 was a call to action against some of the underlying factors leading to global warming and climate change in the world and its adverse effects on the ecosystem, which undermine or threaten the existence of human beings. Like other ecological writers, Al Gore highlights some of the key areas for change toward preserving nature through a proposed plan to meet five strategic objectives. He calls for a balance between the production activities of human beings and their ability to preserve nature for sustainable growth and development through a plan referred to as the Global Marshall Plan. The plan highlights five strategic objectives that the world should embrace towards fostering a better future through balanced existence between nature and humanity. The five strategic objectives include stabilizing the world population, developing and sharing appropriate technologies, global “eco-nomics,” a new generation of treaties and agreements, and a new global environmental consensus CITATION Gor92 \l 1033 (Gore, 1992). However, the Global Marshall Plan does not give a detailed description of how it will address environmental issues such as pesticide use, mass extinctions, or common pooling of resources towards addressing the issue of climate change or environmental pollution.
