FILM CRITIQUE PROJECT Goal: This aims to enhance the students’ ability to do critical thinking also to participate with others in discovery of new ideas, problems, and solutions that are understandable to everyone. There is no doubt that the documentary of Greg Louganis, Back on Board, brings out an intense emotional power that can be comparable to those best narrative films which were shown. The film did not only portrays Louganis’ Olympic victories but also how he struggled with his AIDS, a condition he suffered which is more extensively discussed and found in his 1996 autobiography. Moreover, the film also evaluates the more recent events taking place in his life that have not been shown in detail. This well-documented film is directed by Cheryl Furjanic along with Will Sweeney as her co-writer and producer. This film integrated various footage from several Olympic contests and interviews of Louganis and other significant people in his life.
The film has effectively documented the life of Louganis by combining multiple film techniques. It emphasizes Louganis realities as it cuts back and forth between the recent event events in his life, when he struggles with his financial difficulties, to his history of being an achiever as a diver who experiences both setbacks and victories. As an Olympic athlete, he set the record of winning two gold medals in two consecutive contests during 1984, held in Los Angeles, and in Seoul in 1988. Those triumphs became more meaningful due to the setbacks and disappointments that resulted in this victorious outcome. He was just 16 during his first competition and missed out during the championship. A lot of people anticipated his next participation.
